DEAR TERENCE // EDITION NO. 1

Welcome to this month’s installment of Dear Terence!

Dear Terence,

What are your thoughts on the evolving state of publishing? Is the old agent-query model still valid, or are we moving towards a new autonomy for authors? And if so, how would you recommend one go about print and online publication for a novel these days?

Dear McQ,

Thank you for writing in! As a writer myself, this is something I think about quite often. I think the old as time agent-query model will always be around, are there new ways of getting published? Of course, and many more to follow. I think it’s great to have an agent but it is no longer as vital to becoming a published author. Depending on where you are, there are different resources, such as Jackson McNally in Soho, NY that will print your book for you. Or you can create your own website and publish your novel there. CNET Executive Editor David Carnoy wrote two great pieces on ebook publishing and self-publishing which I believe you may find useful.

We live in a huge world..the only limits out there are the limits you set for yourself. Find the right path for you and your novel and go about it. I look forward to reading your novel!
Thinking about throwing off the corporate chains and being a freelancer? Wondering about how to “make it” in America? Need some sage advice from someone whose been there, done that? We’re excited to announce a new collaboration with Terence Edgerson, the socialite and savant known as NY Social Bee. Terence will be taking questions monthly on Twitter and through our BUNCH facebook page for a Dear Abby style column, BUNCH-ified.

About Terence:

I set out on my own in New York at 18, first interning at Paper Magazine before moving onto DNA models. I started covering the NYFW shows at Bryant Park the following year and began styling that same year. I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some of the best people in the business, from Rachel Zoe to Anna Sui to incredible internships at Out magazine and with menswear designer Timo Weiland. I am a freelance stylist, writer and brand consultant. I’m looking forward to reaching more people with my writing, traveling to new destinations and becoming more present.

There are many ways to submit a question!
