We are now available at Letters from LA in Eagle Rock, CA! We spoke with owner Sasha Martinus about the shop and her favorite spots around the neighborhood.
Established: March 2011
What was your motivation for opening the shop?
I have always been a big fan of small boutiques with individual points of view on fashion and style. I had always planned on (i.e. dreamt, hoped, manifested) having my own store where I would sell my line of clothing and other designers that I felt connected to and it just worked out that I found a location in Eagle Rock. The Eagle Rock/Highland Park area has a super neighborhood-y feel and you really get to know the community because it’s relatively small and people are friendly.
How would you describe the Letters from LA customer?
There are a few different types of people that regularly frequent the store and I love that diversity. I have the gal that wears mostly vintage but loves to buy jewelry from me, there is the girl looking for quality basics with a twist, and there are a lot of people just coming into the area from different parts of LA because they have heard good things about it. The store caters to each of these types and my job is to stock the racks with items that could be loved by any of these ladies.

What are you most looking forward to this year?
My most exciting endeavor for this year is to get my website launched! It’s been a labor of love and has taken me forever but it is coming to the end of the process and I cannot wait to see it come to life.
What are your favorite spots in the neighborhood?
EAT: My new favorite place to eat is a hidden spot my friend Laura from Daydreamer LA introduced me to. It’s a Vietnamese place called good girl dinette. It’s right next door to my fav vintage shop in all of Los Angeles, Avalon Vintage.
DRINK: I love going to The Hermosillo Bar on York Boulevard in Highland Park. It’s a very easy vibe and they have a great beer selection.
SHOP: Avalon Vintage on Avenue 56 is the best place to go for vintage and vinyl. The owners, Rodney and Carmen, have a ‘his and her’ shop and while she is busy with her massive vintage collection he is playing the most amazing records while you shop. My last vinyl purchase was a Tina Turner album of her doing a cover of Led Zepplin’s ‘A Whole Lotta Love”. It’s as amazing as it sounds… I have the record at the shop so stop in and I will play it for you!
