Issue two, Revival, is now available at Myrtle! We chatted with owner Whitney Bickers about the shop and her favorite local neighborhood spots.
Name: Myrtle
Established: 2011
Location: Echo Park (Los Angeles, California)
You previously worked in the entertainment business, how did the idea for Myrtle come about? I had a true “lightbulb moment” — I knew all at once that I should have a store, what it would stock, and what it would be called. In hindsight though, I have loved clothing and design my whole life, and I wish it had come to me sooner.
What was your motivation for opening your own store? There’s a cliche about creating the job you want to have; after being an assistant for seven years, I wanted to do things on my own terms.
How would you describe the Myrtle customer? Fantastic.
What’s been the most rewarding and most challenging part of being a business owner? Every day I meet new and interesting people who share a love for the same things I do; it’s the best feeling when customers come in and are in awe of the things they find here. The challenge is finding ways to keep growing while staying true to my vision (and hopefully giving myself a vacation).
What are you looking forward to most this summer? More beach time!
The store is located on Sunset Blvd in a bustling part of Echo Park, what are your favorite neighborhood spots? The newly reopened Echo Park Lake is hands down my new favorite, but there’s also a ton of great stops — Elf Cafe for tasty vegetarian, El Prado for low-key beers, and Guisado’s for amazing tacos are just the start of a long list.
