MAKERS // SHAWN REAGAN

Oscar Wilde once said, "A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life.” So it's no wonder that when we first laid eyes on Shawn Reagan's line of men's collection of ties called, Primary, we knew he meant serious business. While the line has playful components such as polka dots and vintage flora, you can see the mastery and art behind his craft. A Denver native and art school alum (Colorado State University to be exact) Shawn has spent time on both coasts, but found his place in a community of artists, makers, and creatives back in his hometown.

We talked to Shawn Reagan about being a maker and a Daring Creative and we think you'll be inspired by what you read.

When did you decide to pursue your current career path?

I am always tinkering around with small creative projects.  I wanted to learn to sew, and neck ties struck me as a reasonable place to start.  I don’t remember if I ever made a conscience decision to point my career in a certain way.  I was just following something that I found a great amount of interest in, and the business developed organically from that.

How does the city you live in influence your creativity?

Denver is experiencing a lot of growth at the moment.  The growth is bringing creative individuals and new small businesses.  The buzz of the new city life is very inspirational, and motivational to me, because it shows what is possible.

In your words, what does it mean to be a “creative”?

Having the ability to imagine something, and the execution to bring it to life.

Was there a defining point in your career, and if so, how did it shape you as a creative?

My sophmore year of college I was studying business, but as an elective I signed up for a drawing class.  At the end of the semester my drawing instructor pulled me aside and mentioned that I may have a future in some sort of creative field.  The encouragement went a long way, and by the next semester I was working towards a graphic design degree.

What is a tip/trick/habit that do you do to get through your day? Getting a healthy amount of sleep is a habit that I try to stick to.  Without enough sleep I struggle to do much of anything let alone create, and design.

What has been the pit and peak of your week so far? (a low and a high moment)

The pit of my week has been finding out that my wool source is no longer going to carry the specific weight of wool that I use for the lining of ties.  The high moment has been working with my best friend on some ties for his upcoming wedding.

What is the trait you most admire in others?

Discipline.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

If you want to do good work you must do A LOT of work.  At some point your skill will catch up to your taste.

Finish this sentence:

In 25 years I see myself doing:  A painting everyday.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have:  Skipped college.

I couldn’t live without my:  Backpack.
