SPOTLIGHT // SALES

If you grew up during the 90s, then the very mention of Orlando, Florida conjures up images of Britney Spears, N Sync and Mouseketeers. If you're anyone at all, you probably think of theme parks first. As the most visited city in all of the United States, it's sometimes difficult to separate the facade from the truth and dig deep into the local culture. When photographer, Carlos Quinteros, Jr. approached us about spotlighting Sales, a.k.a. Lauren and Jordan, we took a listen to their music and fell in love. A little bit folksy and a lot of soul, we were hooked. Learning that they're born and bred, and still currently living in Orlando, forced us to take a close look at how the city is bustling with creativity.

We spoke to SALES to discuss being Daring Creatives.

Tell us about SALES:

We (Lauren and Jordan) are friends and have been since we met in High School. Upon the first listen of our first song (a track that will dutifully remain in Jordan’s hard drive til’ the end), we shared a wonderful feeling. Within this whole experience: every song, every practice, every show, even these interviews (sometimes)-- we are chasing that feeling.

When did you decide to pursue your current career path?

We still haven’t committed to being musicians full-time. We both have held a few strange jobs (e.g., Jordan was a pet photographer for a bit and Lauren co-managed a bankrupt condominium where she found a dead body). We will continue to grind until music can sustain both us and our team.

How does the city you live in influence your creativity?

There is a lot of room in Orlando, plenty of room to do whatever it is you need to do.

In your words, what does it mean to be a “creative”?

...being able to present something from your butt, and no one notices it is poop.

What is the biggest misconception about what you do?

Lauren sings. Lauren and Jordan play guitar. Jordan is credited with “programming” because he is a beast. However, Lauren and Jordan both work on the production of the songs. There is no ukulele.

What was the biggest opposing force that you encountered on your creative journey?

The learning curve is steep and time is against us but we will be alright.

Who is someone famous that you think is killing it at the moment? In other words, is there someone whose career you admire.

Taylor Swift is killing it, we hope she hasn’t peaked. St. Vincent is killing it. Mitski is killing the whole game.
